Fresh fruits and vegetables are costly. This is even more apparent when you are buying organic produce. There are things you can do to ensure that the investment you've made in your fresh and healthy organic produce doesn't go to waste.
A few examples of things you can do to keep organic produce fresh are:
* Keep apples refrigerated: Apples are actually one of the most durable fruits and can last for a couple of weeks if stored properly. Apples last much longer if they are placed loosely in one of the bins of the refrigerator.
* Watermelon: Watermelon is fine to keep on the kitchen counter for a few days. However you don't want to store it there indefinitely. Most families don't consume the melon in one sitting, so once it's been cut, cover it with plastic wrap and store it in the refrigerator. It's important to eat it within a day or two after you've cut it as it won't last longer than that.
* Strawberries: Strawberries are another fruit that has a relatively short shelf life. You should purchase organic strawberries right before you are ready to eat them. If you do need to store them for a day or two it's best to keep them in the refrigerator. Simply rinse them once you get home from the market, and then cover them loosely with a damp paper towel in the refrigerator. Doing this will keep them at optimum freshness until you are ready to eat them.
* Corn needs to be let in its husk: Fresh corn on the cob can't be beat. It's important when you purchase fresh organic corn to keep it in the husk until you are ready to either boil or roast it. Keeping it in the husk will ensure that it stays as fresh as it possibly can.
* Asparagus needs to be kept refrigerated: Asparagus does go bad quickly whether it's organic or not. Therefore it's wise to only buy it when you know you will be using it that day or the very next day. Until you are ready to use it, keep it chilled and don't wash it until right before preparation.
It's easy to see that with a little care and attention, your organic fruits and vegetables can stay fresh until you are ready to cook and eat them. Plan carefully, buy what you need and enjoy all of the health benefits that come with cooking organic.
